Location

Located in the heart of Central Africa, Gabon straddles the Equator and is bordered by Equatorial Guinea to the northwest, Cameroon to the north, the Republic of the Congo to the east and south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Libreville, the political and cultural hub, stands out for its energy and the warm welcome of its people.

Political history

Gabon gained independence on August 17, 1960 under President Léon Mba and has experienced political stability in recent years despite the coups of 1964 and 2023.

Presidents of Gabon have succeeded one another in the following order:

  • 1960 – 1967: Léon Mba
  • 1967 – 2009: Omar Bongo Ondimba
  • 2009 – 2023: Ali Bongo Ondimba

The current president, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, has been in power since the coup of August 30, 2023. He was officially inaugurated as President of the Gabonese Republic on May 3, 2025.
